Call To Fall To Repentance Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. Joel 1:15 What is it about human nature that it does not understand that we need God? What makes humans think that they can do better than the Creator of all that is? Why do people doubt God? Why do people forget God? There are many questions that God would like you to answer but people are not willing to go to God and seek His wisdom, His knowledge and His Word. We see it all around us, depression, sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, greed, lies, prisons overflowing and more needing to be built, children abused, marriages end up in divorce, and the hatred that is spreading through the lies of the devil is very saddening to God. What is it going to take to bring us to our knees to repent of all of the sin that we are committing? Why do we resist repentance? Is this really a better world today? Computers, houses, cars and such are great things indeed, but they can never take the place of God. TV is great, but it is now filled with such filth. People think they can watch the TV and the content won’t affect them. But let’s be truthful here and stop lying to ourselves. We got ourselves into this mess by ignoring God and His Word. This past week, I have been putting up on the website and the group site a study in Joel by Tony Perkins. There are a total of 3 chapters in the book of Joel and depending on what version you are reading, 4 pages. Joel is not a hard book to read in the sense that it is short, but it is in the sense that it speaks the truth to us even today. Tony talks about the parallels between then and now. They had locusts eating away their grain and we have an economic meltdown, joblessness, people losing their homes, businesses closing. It’s foolishness not to see that we are in dire need. The people of Israel realized that God is in control and if they didn’t change their lives, God was going to punish them for what they had been doing. Sadly, we have become people who do not think that God will discipline us anymore. When a natural disaster happens, we do not tend to think that God is trying to get our attention. But if we look to the Bible, we see that God has used nature to correct His people. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah as He raining down burning sulfur. History shows us the sin of those towns. Sexual immorality was running rampant throughout. There were platforms that were set up in the streets where men would grab other men and have sex there in the streets. God desires that we be who and what we were created for, but we resist. Many people say that they are just being who they are because it is their nature, but the truth is God created us for Himself. We were created to worship God and to learn His ways. Our nature is that of God. When we go against our God made order, we create chaos in the natural order that God created. And that is what has happened. But what is it going to take before people change their nature back to what we were created for? When we look at the book of Joel 2:3-5, it talks about an invasion of locusts. Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden, behind them, a desert waste—nothing escapes them. They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry. With a noise like that of chariots they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle. Now let’s fast forward to the book of Revelation. In chapter 6 it talks about the 4 horses and their riders. I looked and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest…Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword…I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!…I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following right behind him. They were given the power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. Now let’s go back to Joel 1, Wake up, you drunkards and weep! Wail all you drinkers of wine, wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips…Grain offerings and drink offerings are cut off from the house of the Lord (vs.5, 9). Here we see paralleled locusts marching as an army and in Revelation we see the horsemen going throughout the earth as if it were an army destroying. “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages,” and in Joel, there is not enough grain to make the daily offering in the house of the Lord. Reading farther in chapter one of Joel, it talks about how the grain is destroyed, the wheat and the barley. But God called the people in Joel 2:12-14, “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing—grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God. God desires that we return to Him. He wants you to change your hearts, to start on the inside and to change back to the nature in which we were created for. We are three part creatures—spirit, soul, and body—and when they are not aligned, chaos happens. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and master, we begin again to change back to the nature into which we were created for. Our spirit is one with the Spirit of God, but our soul and body are still working through the lies of the devil in order to change our lives. When we accept Jesus, our spirit is now sinless, but we have to work out our soul and body daily to align them with the spirit. Life in God is not boring and doing good things is something that is worth achieving. In the movie, Evan Almighty, God writes in the dirt, ARK and tells Evan, Acts of Random Kindness. Your life will change as you work in yourself, God and His Word and His way. But you have to do this daily. It will become a way for your life if you will only begin with the first step. We begin by accepting that Jesus is the only way to heaven, that He is our Lord and Savior. We confess our sins to God and we repent, we do not do the same things over and over again and expect different results. That’s insanity. If we gossip, we have to resist gossip and walk away. If we curse or lie, we need to keep a watch over our words. If we have problems controlling the way that we spend money, we work towards saving and not buying everything in sight. If we think of only ourselves, we think of others before we think of self. If God is not the first thing that you think of when you wake up and the last thing you think of when you go to sleep, you work on that. Begin each morning when you first wake up just simply saying to God, “Thank You that I am able to live another day” and when you lie down at night, say, “Thank You for all the blessings that You gave to me today God.” Create a personal relationship with God, just as you do with those around you. God wants you to step out and come to Him and learn all the wonderful things that He has for you. And He does have wonderful plans for you. After seventy years of captivity, God began to fulfill His promises to the Jewish people. God said, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). The Jews were in captivity because they disobeyed God. They needed to learn how to come back to God and to learn to live in His way again. God always wants the best for us, good things, and He wants us to prosper. We just have to align our lives with His. God still judges and He still punishes. Don’t be fooled and think that God doesn’t care. That’s a lie of the devil. When Jesus came to earth, He came to show us what God wants of us. Jesus came to show us God’s way for life. The Gospels are full of all the things, which will bring us to a closer relationship with God. There is still time for change, for each person to change from the unnatural to the natural creations that God created us to be. There is still time for each to repent and to change their lives. There is still time for this country to change and become blessed once again. But the change that is going on now in this country is taking us farther from God and taking us farther away from all that He created us to be. We have within us the ability to change because we were created by God to live and to love according to His way. God’s Word, His Bible, is our Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. In this form God has provided a way for us to learn from Him. Far too many churches and far too many people are only concerned with what’s in it for them instead of what is in it for God. God will not force you to change, but if you don’t you will lose out on the best thing that could happen to you, eternal life with God. There are preachers out there preaching that once saved always saved. Don’t believe it. In Revelations 20:11-15: Then I saw a great white throne and Him Who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from His presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name is not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. God will judge us by what we do in this life. I don’t know when the end will come, only God the Father does. Our lives are written down, all that we do, so that when we come before God to be judged, there is no denying what we have done. We should be living a life in fear so that we don’t lose our gift of Salvation, which is found in the cross of Jesus Christ. Not fear of God but fear that if we don’t live our lives according to God, we will end up in the lake of fire for all eternity. God will never stop loving you but He will let you be punished for not following the way of the Lord. There is no other way, there is no other person, and there is nothing else that will bring you home to God. Jesus shed His blood to take away your sins. Live the life that you were meant to live. |
